The Foreign Policy Research Institute was founded in 1955 by Robert Strausz-Hupe on the premise that, as he put it, “a nation should think before it acts.”  Strausz-Hupe is said to have introduced geopolitics into the American vocabulary, which is simply the use of history, geography, and culture to illuminate contemporary international affairs and undergird recommendations for policies that advance the national interest -- a tradition that FPRI maintains to this day. Unique among the think tanks but derivative from its orientation toward history, it sponsors the Butcher History Institute, a nationally recognized professional development program for high school teachers that enjoys participation by faculty from over 700 schools in 46 states. FPRI publishes Orbis, a quarterly journal of world affairs, and E-Notes, circulated weekly by email to readers in over 85 countries. Its Marvin Wachman Center for Civic and International Literacy offers programming in Philadelphia, Princeton, New York City, and Washington DC.
